Hear what Walsh students have to say about the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program

Rachel Schneider '18

The CHD program at Walsh has been an integral part of my educational growth as a counselor. Through the BA/MA program, I was able to begin taking graduate counseling courses as an undergraduate. Then, as a Dual student, I was able to attain my School Counseling License and Clinical Mental Health Counseling license in under three years. One of the highlights of my education was the Uganda Experience that the CHD program offers for its students. During this trip, I was able to grow in my multicultural understanding of the world, and make long-lasting connections with both the people of Uganda, and my fellow students and professors. With an incredibly supportive faculty and immersive courses, I felt prepared and motivated as I entered practicum and my school and clinical internships, and now as I begin my career as a school-based therapist in Cleveland.

The Walsh CHD program has provided me the tools needed to succeed after graduating and getting licensed. Whether it’s the role-plays, the group work, the lectures, or the staff, the program provides a solid foundation for any future counselor. Having a staff that actively engages in the art of counseling infuses course-work and lectures with real-world knowledge and practicality. In addition, having the opportunity to role-play with peers in a learning environment provides the future counselor the opportunity to practice the skills needed to provide effective counseling in the community. The program has provided me and my current employer a counselor who believes in himself and who believes in his own ability to manage a real-world case load of clients. Sometimes, there can be a disconnect between academia and the real-world, but Walsh’s program bridges that divide and provides a clear understanding of the role of a counselor in a community mental health setting. With the help of Walsh, I have successfully graduated and gained meaningful employment as a counselor and I am forever grateful.

Walsh’s CHD program provided me with the academic and professional support to develop as a competent counselor. I felt more than prepared for my internships at both the inpatient and outpatient levels, and my supervisors have commented on my training, as our practicum program is highly organized and offers more clinical experience that most counseling programs. I built long-lasting relationships with fellow cohort members, as well as the faculty and staff. I was also able to have opportunities that many counseling programs do not provide, such as multicultural counseling experiences (i.e. the Uganda trip) and becoming involved with state and national counselor organizations. My experiences at Walsh has prepared me for my various leaderships today as a counselor.
