Mission
The mission of the Herb Society at the Hoover Historical Center is to provide education, experience and enjoyment for the active herb gardener and for the visitors to the Hoover Historical Center at Walsh University. It is also our mission to maintain the beauty of the gardens at the Hoover Historical Center.
History
The Herb Society at the Hoover Historical Center, a nonprofit organization, was established in 1984, to maintain the gardens, which complement the grounds of the Hoover Historical Center, original Hoover family farmland. The herb gardens at the Hoover Historical Center were originally established in 1983 as part of The Hoover Company's 75th anniversary festivities.
In 1997, the Hoover Historical Center was moved inside Hoover Park, 400 yards west of its original location. In the spring of 1998, members of The Herb Society at the Hoover Historical Center designed the new gardens, a beautiful complement to the grounds of the Hoover family homestead. These gardens include:
- Bettie Garden
- Butterfly Garden
- Children's Garden
- Circle and Fountain Garden
- Culinary Garden
- Shade/Monarch Habitat
- Faerie Garden
- Fragrance Garden
- Rose Garden
- Medicinal Herbs
- Remembrance Garden
Activities
The members of The Herb Society at the Hoover Historical Center plant, maintain and harvest the gardens. March - November, members meet monthly with updates on status of the gardens. An educational program is presented at each meeting to enhance their knowledge of plants and gardening.
They hold workshops creating herbal and floral crafts to sell at the "Unique Boutique" which is held in conjunction with The Herb Society's annual September fundraiser, the Summer Garden Tea. In addition to crafts, the Society's boutique offers unique garden and tea-related items available for purchase, gift baskets and themed baskets for raffles. Complimentary guided tours of the herb gardens are also a part of this exclusive event.
The Herb Society was presented the Canton Garden Center’s Award of Excellence in Commercial Category in Annual Beautification Contest for 2001 and 2016. Also in 2016, the Herb Society earned First Place awards from the Garden Club of Ohio (GCO) for its Butterfly Gardens and Civic Beautification Maintenance, and an Honorable Mention as an Outstanding Garden Club.
All members must meet the requirements of the organization bylaws and a membership fee is paid annually.
New members, called "provisionals" are sponsored by a current member of the group and have bylaw requirements to fulfill during their first, the "provisional" year in the Society, to achieve active status.
