It is likely that your student will struggle at some point during their Walsh University experience. This is completely normal as students are taught to develop critical thinking skills, as they interact with people with different backgrounds and go through the natural maturation process. Walsh provides a variety of resources and services to assist students with these challenges ranging from academic concerns to financial struggles to adjustment and transition challenges.

CARe Team (Campus Assistance and Response Team)

CARe Team was developed in 1991 to gather information from the Walsh community regarding at-risk students. Members work to intervene and assist students to promote student success. Concerns about students can range from academic to financial to personal.

Academic Support Center 

The Academic Support Center (ASC), located in Farrell Hall 209, offers tutoring in a wide variety of subject areas. The ASC provides individual tutorials in half-hour or hour-long sessions, peer tutors who have a solid background in their areas, and tutor schedules that allow for both walk-in appointments and by-arrangement opportunities.

Accessibility Services

Walsh University is committed to fostering an institutional climate in which qualified students with disabilities have full access to the academic environment. The Office of Accessibility Services (OAS) allows students the opportunity for full participation in the Walsh Experience by providing reasonable, appropriate accommodations, as directed by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008.

Housed in Farrell Hall Room 209 along with the Academic Support Center, the OAS verifies students' disability status and determines eligibility for specific accommodations.

Medical Leave Policy

Students experiencing personal/emotional/medical difficulties and unable to complete academic or social responsibilities to Walsh University may request a Medical Leave of Absence. Obtaining a Medical Leave can impact several areas of student life including but not limited to housing, financial aid, scholarships, medical insurance, registration status, and athletic eligibility. It is the student’s responsibility to research how a Medical Leave of Absence may affect them in order to make an educated decision on whether to pursue a Medical Leave of Absence. 

Counseling Services

The primary function of Counseling Services at Walsh University is to provide brief counseling, testing, and referral services to students enrolled in the University. This service is free to all enrolled students.

Counseling Services is located in the David Campus Center, next to the Bookstore. This office offers a confidential place to discuss concerns when difficult situations arise, when problems seem overwhelming or options appear limited. Focusing on helping persons explore solutions, counseling typically lasts between four and eight sessions. If necessary, appropriate referrals to outside health care professionals are made.

Health Services 

Mercy Wellness Center coordinates Walsh University’s Student Health Services from a clinic in the Mercy Wellness Center of the Cecchini Center. Professional Advisor Role 

At Walsh University, the purpose of advising is to assist students in the development of their academic program, give details students' rights and options within the Walsh Community, and educate students in the their advisee responsibilities. Advisors work with advisees to achieve academic excellence by fostering critical thinking, effective communication, and growth opportunities.

Professional advisors are assigned by major for incoming first-year students. Depending on the major, transition to faculty advisors occurs after the first or second year. 

Campus Police 

The Walsh University Campus Police Department’s primary goal is to provide a safe and secure environment for the campus community, and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - even when the University is closed. The staff consists of sworn law enforcement officers who have full arrest power, are armed with weapons, and are able to provide all necessary police services on the University property.

These officers are also available to assist with:

  • Vehicle lock-outs
  • Courtesy escorts from buildings to vehicles, vehicles to buildings or building to building on campus for anyone who feels uncomfortable due to the time of day/night or has a concern regarding safety.
  • Jumping the battery of vehicles.

Please note that these officers are valuable educators with our students, and embrace the community policing philosophy. It is also their sworn duty to uphold the law as well as Walsh University policies.

Notification of Rights Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

Walsh University is covered by, and subscribes to, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) - informally known as the Buckley Amendment. This law permits students the right of confidentiality and the right to inspect and review their educational record as maintained by the appropriate offices and agencies of the University.
